I am Dr. Shaym Kumar, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur. My primary research focuses on flow visualization using Digital Inline Holography (DIH). Additionally, I am involved in developing machine learning models for processing holograms generated through DIH.
I completed my Direct Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras under the guidance of Prof. S. R. Chakravarthy and Prof. Manikandan Mathur. My doctoral research focused on investigating the effects of background air turbulence on polydisperse droplet growth rates, motivated by the problem of warm rain initiation. Following my Ph.D., I worked for nearly four years as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota with Prof. Chris Hogan and Prof. Jiarong Hong, where I developed and applied digital inline holography and machine-learning–based image post-processing methods. Subsequently, for a short period, I held a National Post-Doctoral Fellowship (N-PDF) in the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Hyderabad with Prof. Kirti Chandra Sahu and Prof. Lakshmana Dora Chandrala.
My expertise lies in multiphase flows, flow diagnostics, and image processing. I graduated from TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, Kerala in 2013 with a B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering.
