Gold Committees

The University of Minnesota SAVMA chapter has a unique tiered membership. YOU have the opportunity to shape the direction of YOUR SAVMA chapter! As a SAVMA chapter member, you can choose to be a maroon or gold member. This unique system allows you to choose to serve on 1 of 8 different "gold" committees (see committee descriptions below). You serve on a particular committee for a total of 1 year, with a minimum requirement of 12 gold committee service hours. Each committee will be made up of approximately 5-10 students with an executive board member liaison to help answer questions. Serving on a gold committee is designed for, but not limited to, 1st year students*.

Committee Descriptions

Student Wellbeing Committee

The proposed purpose of this committee is to focus on student health and wellbeing. Responsibilities include: planning wellness events for Wellness Wednesdays, helping coordinate wellness events for Houses, working with other student clubs/ASA/Student Council, and any other entities that would have a vested interest in helping with student well-being.

Philanthropy Committee

The purpose of the Philanthropy Committee is to orchestrate annual fundraising events; currently the Hoof ‘N Woof 5K Pet Run (Fall Event). All proceeds are donated towards local organizations. This committee may also be asked to assist with other SAVMA philanthropic endeavors.

Fundraising Committee

The purpose of the fundraising committee is to raise funds to financially support student attendance to the SAVMA Symposium. If additional funding can be raised, student attendance to the AVMA Convention over the summer can also be supported. This may include MVMA coat check, Trivia Night, and the White Coat Rose Sale. Planning these events will involve letter writing, phone calls, preparing needed supplies for each event, advertising of events, and staffing the actual event. Students will be encouraged to think of additional fundraising opportunities to help defray costs of travel to these events.

Clothing Committee

The purpose of the Clothing Committee is to manage the sale of merchandise that financially supports SAVMA in order to provide a wide array of opportunities for the students of the CVM. The committee will be responsible for creating, ordering, distributing, and selling merchandise for two sales throughout the year: Fall/Winter sale, and a Spring sale. This committee requires creative people who are willing to dedicate a fair amount of time to SAVMA.

Social Committee

The purpose of the social committee is to help facilitate social events within the CVM for SAVMA members and to hold Member Appreciation breakfast(s). In doing so, Social Committee will assist in the in the delivery of SAVMA benefits to the student body. The committee will organize and operate various causal gatherings throughout the school year (typically one event per month). The organization of these events involves planning, coordination with involved parties, ordering the necessary items and food, as well as the set up and clean up for the events (off-campus) for students, faculty and staff throughout each semester.

IVSA Committee

The purpose of the International Veterinary Students’ Association (IVSA) Committee is to support the IVSA Representative. IVSA focuses on collaboration of veterinary students worldwide. IVSA committee member responsibilities include organizing international related events, IVSA clothing, fundraising and student exchanges.

DEI Committee

The purpose of the Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee is to help increase engagement surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion. We strive to increase awareness and appreciation surrounding various differing identities, including race, ability, sexual orientation, and neurodiversity. The DEI Committee promotes these in the campus community through activities, such as a school-wide podcast club, lunch talks, and collaboration with other clubs and committees and with the University's DEI Committee.

One Health Committee

The purpose of the One Health committee is to educate the community about the role of veterinary medicine in public health. Veterinary public health focuses on the link between human and animal populations, strives to promote awareness within the community, and encourage collaboration between health professions. Previously suggested activities include a booth at activity fairs (within and outside of the CVM), hosting an emergency response planning seminar, or co-hosting an event with students from another health profession (i.e. Health Students for a Healthy Climate).
