Since becoming a licensed preceptor in 2010, I have sincerely enjoyed working with the pharmacy students that I have encountered. But let's be honest, not every student makes precepting a golden experience. As I have matured as a professional and become a mother of three small children, my own capacity of awareness and empathy has also grown for my pharmacy students. Yet, it is without a doubt that my greatest learning and preceptor development has come through my experiences with my more difficult students. Read more

Being a Pharmacist Course

Being a Pharmacist Course Friday 3/29/19 (last day of APPE Block 8)

The overall purpose of this course is to present new learning opportunities for students as they conclude their pharmacy education experience, in a professionally authentic environment. There will be information about the Board of Pharmacy licensure process, board exams, loan repayment & financial planning resources, and students will have an opportunity to talk with career advisors to help with post-graduation career decisions. It is an opportunity to hear about experiences their classmates have had on rotation and to reflect on how they impact their professional growth . Read more

Students undoubtedly have responsibilities at some point on rotation that they, frankly, do not enjoy. Many students will continue with these responsibilities and numb themselves to the situation or put in “passing” effort. In these times of low-engagement, students may become bitter and not realize that they are receiving an experience that prepares them for their career as a pharmacist. During my rotations, I have found it rejuvenating when preceptors identify specific skills utilized during the rotation and explain how developing those skills will help me achieve my career aspirations. Preceptors Recognition

Mentor of the Year Jeff Shapiro, RPh

Jeff Shapiro is a preceptor at LeafLine Labs in Hibbing, MN.

The Mentor of the Year is an individual who has shown support of the mentoring program and its goals; has demonstrated a genuine interest in mentoring students; is willing to spend time in mentoring students; and has created a positive mentoring experience for students. The award is sponsored by the Pharmacy Alumni Society. According to nominator, Reid Larson, Jeff should receive the Mentor of the Year award as he has become increasingly involved in mentoring first-year student pharmacists and precepting fourth-year students in a unique career pathway that highlights both patient-centered care and legislative advocacy. Jeff is a pharmacist at Leafline Labs in Hibbing. Reid noted that Jeff is a strong advocate for his patients and the profession. Read more about the award.

APPE

  • 1/14/19 - 2/22/19 APPE Block 7 (students complete 5 of the 6 weeks; this provides time to attend interviews, etc)
  • 2/25/19 - 3/29/19 APPE Block 8
  • 3/22/19 University Holiday (Students are not required to be on site on University holidays; however, must make up the time)
  • 3/29/19 Being a Pharmacist one day course (students whose site is within 2.5 hours of Braham, MN (event location) are excused from their Block 8 site to attend; others are expected to remain at the Block 8 site)
  • 4/1/19 - 5/3/19 APPE Block 9
  • 5/3/19 Pharmacy Day (Students must request off from preceptors if attending; must make up the time away)
  • 5/10/19 PharmD Class of 2019 Celebration and Awards 5-7pm TCF Bank Stadium; DQ Club Room
  • 5/11/19 Graduation for PharmD Class of 2019, 2pm Northrop Auditorium

IPPE/APPE Block 1 2019-2020 starts 5/20/19
