The Midwest Climate Adaptation Science Center is happy to offer two community (and lactic acid) building opportunities for runners and walkers who may be attending the MW CASC Annual Gathering! Runs will be “led” (or perhaps wheezed to a finish) by fellow WRASC-al Daniel Vimont. All running/walking abilities are welcome to participate in either event (we’ll split into groups if we need). Both runs should finish with enough time to return to your hotel and shower before arriving at the Annual Gathering by 9:00 a.m.
The Annual Gathering pre-game begins with a 10K (ish) run (5K walk/run options available) around the UW-Madison Arboretum! We’ll meet at Colectivo Coffee on Monroe Street at 6:30 a.m. and proceed in a cyclonic direction (northern hemisphere) around the course. This somewhat hilly course has plenty to see, including the lake, woods, wildlife, local neighborhoods, and a couple of examples of climate adaptation to hydrologic extremes. 5K walk/run routes will proceed along the West Side Bike Path (also scenic and awesome). Grab a coffee from Colectivo afterwards, and you’ll be ready to tackle the day!
Directions for 5K Route:
From Colectivo, join the “Arb Trail” until Glenway.
Ascend Glenway hill and turn right onto the Bike Path
At the first “off ramp” (it’s obvious), veer off the bike path and EITHER:
If you want to return to Colectivo, just head down the hill (Sheldon St.) and enjoy some coffee!
Or… turn left onto Fox.
A block later, cross Commonwealth (Fox becomes Leonard St.)
Continue on Leonard, which curves around to what appears to be a dead end – SURPRISE! There’s a short walking through-path at the end of Leonard.
Cross Monroe, and turn left.
Turn right onto Edgewood Ave, and ascend then descend to Edgewood Dr.
Turn right and follow Edgewood Drive to Woodrow St. back to Monroe St.
Turn left onto Monroe and follow Monroe back to Colectivo. Join your friends who off-ramped at step 3!
Directions for 10K Route:
Directions: This one’s easy. Just follow Dan. If you’re faster than Dan, you deserve to get lost anyway, and the extra miles will be good for you (says Dan, angrily). Just kidding, of course.
Really, if you’re faster than Dan, just start with Dan for the first 100m, then take a left every chance you get (remember, “left is right”. Wait… how about “right is wrong”. Hmm…). The only exception is around 1.5M, where after the golf course where you’ll want to go all the way up Manitou to Seminole Hwy (just before entering the Arb). From then on, everything is left. We are in Madison, after all.
Clear out that lactic acid from yesterday, and/or burn off that bratwurst and sauerkraut you regret eating last night with a 5K (ish) run (easily cut to 2 miles if you want) from Memorial Union! We’ll start from the Langdon Street entrance to Memorial Union, and warm up with an out-and-back around the Wisconsin Capitol Building. Get ready to crank up the heart rate with a hill climb up Bascom Hill (where John Muir used to sit and read) and be sure to rub Abe’s foot for good luck! The up-and-down continues as we proceed to Observatory Hill, with a beautiful view down on Lake Mendota. Finally, we’ll cool down along the Howard Temin Lakeshore Path, which takes us back to the Memorial Union Terrace. Grab a coffee at Pete’s Coffee when you’re done!
Directions: Easy way, follow Dan.
Faster (see above for snarky comments) or slower than Dan? Here you go…
Starting from Memorial Union, head up State Street, circle the Capital, and then go back down State Street to Memorial Union.
You can stop there, if you’d like, or you can continue up Bascom Hill (be sure to rub Abe’s foot).
Veer to the right around Bascom Hall, then continue westward along Observatory Dr.
Just past the overlook (which is obvious), veer right down sidewalks / paths to the Lakeshore Path
Turn right onto the Lakeshore Path and continue all the way back to Memorial Union.
Meet your friends (who bailed at step 2) for Coffee at Memorial Union!
