The Makerspace & Virtual Reality Studio at the Health Sciences Library are dynamic spaces supporting student creativity and innovation.
The Makerspace and VR specialist provides support for daily operations, including supporting visitors in navigating the space and troubleshooting equipment. Specialists also lead workshops, assist with outreach events, and complete special projects to improve our spaces and offerings.
Welcome users into the Makerspace and VR Studio and help them safely operate equipment (e.g., 3D printers, VR headsets, laser cutter, sewing machines, hand tools), find materials, and get started on their work.
Contribute to an environment that welcomes users with all levels of experience and ability and from a wide variety of communities and identities.
Develop familiarity and skills with Makerspace and VR equipment and software and share what they have learned with users and other staff.
Assist new users with the technology, lead tours/introductions to the space, and teach workshops.
Keep the spaces tidy and well-stocked, perform troubleshooting and repairs, and ensure that equipment and materials are ready to use.
Solve technical problems with 3D printers, VR headsets, etc., and refer problems to supervisors or Tier 2 Libraries technical support.
Complete projects as assigned that improve the space and inspire users (in consultation with full-time library staff).
Strong customer service skills.
Exhibit strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with patrons from a wide variety of experiences and backgrounds.
Demonstrate independent decision-making and problem solving abilities and an interest and willingness to learn.
Students with Work Study awards are preferred.
No technical experience is required; training is provided by lead staff. Interests or prior experience could include:
Fabrication and crafting experience (ex. 3D printing, laser cutting, papercrafts, machine or hand sewing and embroidery, milling)
CAD, vector, rendering, Arduino, 3D modeling, game development, or other creation software experience (ex. Adobe suite, Unity, Unreal)
Design thinking, ideation, and prototyping
Troubleshooting technology and repairing equipment
