Mitchell Luskin organized a summer school in 2018 to introduce students from the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program (UMTYMP) http://www.mathcep.umn.edu/umtymp to elementary quantum mechanics applied to 2D Materials. UMTYMP is a highly acclaimed accelerated mathematics program for exceptionally talented students in grades 5-12.
Luskin has continued to offer the summer school each year in collaboration with Professor Alex Watson.
The theory of 2D materials offers a rich arena to explore mathematical topics in linear algebra, differential equations, geometry, and topology at a level that are accessible to the UMTYMP students. The lectures are followed by a tour of the 2D materials laboratory of Professor Ke Wang at the University of Minnesota with hands-on experience exfoliating graphene.
