Matthew Winn (B.A. Univ of Delaware; AuD, PhD Univ of Maryland) is a professor of speech-language-hearing sciences at the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on speech perception and listening effort in people who have hearing loss. There are also some side-branch projects on speech acoustics and building tools to help other scientists. He teaches courses on cochlear implants, hearing science, and speech acoustics. Matt has conducted numerous workshops and seminars about science communication and data visualization. Outside the lab, he enjoys playing music and attending Gopher hockey games.

Justin (B.S. University of Rochester, Ph.D. Harvard University) is a postdoctoral researcher in SLHS and an investigator in the Center for Applied and Translational Sensory Sciences (CATSS) at the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on how listeners with hearing loss integrate multisensory information to support real-world communication. He enjoys drumming, being beaten at pickleball by seniors, and spending time outdoors with his wife, kiddo, and dog.
Abbey (Ph.D., The University of Texas at Dallas) is a postdoctoral associate in the Listen Lab. Her research focuses on prosody and how listeners use features like speaking rate and intonation to decide whether a talker believes them. She is interested in how listeners' past experiences, relationship to the talker, and hearing status affect their interpretation of doubting and trusting prosody. Outside the lab, Abbey enjoys desserts (both making and eating them), training her dog (Chiki), and learning to dance.
Michael (Au.D. University of Washington) is a PhD candidate in SLHS at the University of Minnesota. His main line of research focuses on aspects of speech perception that are effortful for cochlear implant listeners, and how those momentary increases in effort can build toward fatigue. Outside of work he enjoys watching Formula 1, and spending quality time with his partner Sarah and their cat, Minerva Jean (pics on website).
Harley Wheeler (B.S. & AuD, James Madison University) is a PhD student in SLHS. His work focuses on perception of meaning and emotion signaled by prosodic cues in speech, particularly among listeners with cochlear implants and hearing loss. Harley aims to create clinical methods for assessing this ability to improve patient quality of life. Outside the lab, he enjoys music and time outdoors.
Miski is a first-year AuD student in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences at the University of Minnesota. She currently plans to pursue an AuD with an interest in speech perception and acoustics, and she’s hoping to explore her interests throughout graduate school. She spends a lot of time with family, engaging with her community, and is a loyal Swiftie.
LO is a first-year AuD student in the speech-language-hearing sciences department at the University of Minnesota. They plan to pursue an AuD, PhD program with the goal of doing clinically based cochlear implant research. She finds great joy in working with this population and is looking forward to where graduate school takes them.
Ella is an undergraduate student majoring in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences and German Studies and minoring in Integrative Neuroscience. Ella is passionate about the world of hearing loss and mental repair and hopes to pursue a degree in Audiology. As a native Minnesotan, Ella cherishes her time she spends up north with her family. In her free time, Ella enjoys knitting and crocheting.
Gracia is an undergraduate student majoring in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences and minoring in Integrative Neuroscience. They are most interested in research related to cochlear implants and hearing loss, and are deciding between Audiology and ENT. In their free time, Gracia is a classical guitarist, loves painting, and playing video games.
Kate received a B.A. from St. Olaf College and an Au.D. from the University of Minnesota. Following a decade of audiology practice at the Mayo Clinic, she returned to the University and joined the Listen Lab in 2019. She supports the lab on a variety of exciting research projects, all with the goal of better understanding the challenges of living with adult-onset hearing loss.
