Jean-Philippe Richard  is a Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where he is director of Faculty and Academic Affairs. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota in 2018, Dr. Richard was a faculty member at Purdue University (2002-2008) and at the University of Florida (2008-2018) where he was PhD coordinator. Dr. Richard holds a bachelor of engineering in Applied Mathematics from Université Catholique de Louvain and a PhD in Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Dr. Richard's research interests are in the area of nonconvex optimization, and in particular, in mixed integer linear and nonlinear programming. He is particularly interested in methods for obtaining globally optimal solutions to these problems using techniques from polyhedral theory, discrete mathematics, and convex analysis. Over the years, Dr. Richard has applied these techniques in various application areas, including infrastructure systems, transportation, data analysis, and medicine. His methodological research has been funded by the National Science Foundation; his applied work has been funded by class-I US railroads including UPRR and CSX.

Dr. Richard has served as the vice chair for Integer Programming for the INFORMS Optimization Society (2006-2008) and has served on the program committees of the Mixed Integer Programming Workshop (2007,2008) and the Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization Conference (2014). He was also a cluster organizer for Global Optimization and for MINLP at the International Symposium on Mathematical Programming (ISMP) in 2015 and 2018, respectively. He currently serves as an associate editor for Mathematics of Operations Research, Journal on Global Optimization, Optimization Letters, IISE Transactions, IMA Journal on Management Mathematics, and Operations Research Forum.
