Important Publisher Typos
I am correcting only those errors that I thought would be helpful for those who read any of the four books and other publications listed below. These are mostly errors in listing numbers or words—but still worthwhile to clarify. I went over all 14 of my books from 1960-2006 and the four books below were the only books with errors worth correcting. At the end I noted two papers of mine with a similar small but worth correcting error. My 1960, 1967, 1986, and 1990 books are available at Erwin Haeberle’s website and any errors in them have been corrected.
1. Premarital Sexual Standards in America, 1960, (The Free Press)
(This error was only in the First Printing of the hardcover edition)
p. 191, line 6, change “not” to “now”
2. The Social Context of Premarital Sexual Permissiveness, 1967, (Holt, Rinehart and Winston)
(These errors were not corrected in later printings)
If you read my p. 147, Table 9.5: In the three categories in the top portion of the table, the labels are in the wrong order--they should be presented as follows:
Currently Married 18 (1129)
Divorced or Separated 42 (56)
Widowed 14 (99)
The rest of the findings in Table 9.5 are correctly presented.
3. Contemporary Theories About the Family: Research Based Theories, Vol. 1, 1979, Co-edited with W. Burr, R. Hill, and I. Nye. (Macmillan).
(The p. 23 errors were corrected in some later printings.)
p. 18, right hand column, the listing should read:
p. 23, right hand column, the diagram under Figure 2.3, containing a circle with lo and hi in it, should be placed under Figure 2.4 at the very bottom of the page. The diagram under Figure 2.4, containing a circle with an S in it, should be under Figure 2.3, just before the start of the paragraph “Some authors...”
4. Journey Into Sexuality: An Exploratory Voyage, 1986, (Prentice-Hall)
(The corrections noted below apply only to the first printing of this book.)
p. 42, footnote 28, 5th line down, cross out the word “low”.
p. 87, first paragraph 4th line down, replace the word “smaller” with the word “similar”.
p. 104, at the beginning of the first line of the page add the word “gender” and place a period after it to end the sentence. Then start a new sentence with the word “Ideology”
p. 126, last paragraph on the page, fourth line down, drop the word “families” and replace it with “females”.
p. 206, footnote 51, third line from the bottom of the page in the quotation, change the word “forming” to “harming.”
p. 217, In proposition 24, the second line, add the word “jealousy” after the word “marital.” In proposition 25, line one, add the word “marital” before the word “jealousy”.
p. 222, third line from the top, the last word in the sentence should be changed from “theory” to “therapy.”
p. 232, (SS)3, in the Title the first word in parentheses should be “Male” not “Make”.
In the second line under (SS)3 drop the word “either” and replace it with “neither”.
On the third line, drop the word “neither” and replace it with “either”.
Articles and Chapters: (I did not search carefully over my many papers but these two errors stayed in my mind)
a) R. Green and J. Wiener (Eds.) Methodology in Sex Research, Washington, D.C., U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO), 1980.
Chapter One, pp. 1-66: by Ira L. Reiss, Robert Walsh, Mary Zey-Ferrell, William Tolone and Ollie Pocs. .
Page .9 , third line up from the bottom of this page, reads: “promiscuity which refers to relationships with more than one partner..” It was submitted by me to read: “promiscuity, which refers to indiscriminate activity.” All I can say is that it is public knowledge that the government and the GPO had hesitated to publish this book on sexuality for over two years. The difference in meaning in this definition of promiscuity is so flagrant and the words used so different from my words that it doesn’t seem like a “typo”.
b) Ira L. Reiss, Al Banwart and Harry Foreman, “Premarital Contraceptive Usage: A Study and Some Theoretical Exploration,” Journal of Marriage and the Family, August 1975, pp. 619-630.
On p. 626 in the diagram on the top right hand column of that page there should be an arrow going from Sex Information to Clinic Attendance.
