Purpose: Students are evaluated annually by their committees and more generally by the full graduate faculty to assess timely progress in the program, to identify strengths and challenges, to express concerns, and to celebrate accomplishments.
In January, students will receive an email from the Graduate Program Coordinator (GPC) indicating the process and deadline to submit MA, MA/PhD, or PhD degree-specific information to their advisor and FSoS inside committee members.
Students will identify an advisor, committee members, TA/RA supervisors, course instructors, and directed research/independent study supervisors who have worked with or taught them over the past year. The GPC will collect TA/RA supervisors' input on student performance.
Advisors and committee members will review materials, and share their summary with graduate faculty at the Graduate Faculty meeting. Other faculty may provide additional input at that time. The discussion will conclude with a recommendation for the annual progress review score, based on the FSoS Milestone Expectation Timeline and Checklist.
Following that meeting, each student will receive a letter from the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) communicating the score, with brief comments that provide a rationale for the score. A copy of the letter will be placed in their file.
Students should schedule a progress review meeting with their advisor and committee members, either in person or via Zoom, to celebrate accomplishments, discuss feedback about growth areas, plan for next year, and a completed Individual Development Plan (IDP).
Students are primarily evaluated on whether or not they are making timely progress in the program (e.g., coursework and milestone completion, progress toward master’s thesis for MA/PhD achieving portfolio competencies, existence of incompletes, GPA, and clinical hours, internship, theory of change papers for CFT students). Faculty evaluation of timely progress will result in the conclusion that students are either in good standing or NOT in good standing in the program. An evaluation of good standing is necessary to be seriously considered for department, college, and university awards and department-based funding.
If it is determined that a student is NOT in good standing, they will receive specific information about why this was deemed to be the case, (i.e., which milestones have not been completed in a timely manner) and what needs to be done to rectify this situation. The advisor will ask the student to submit a plan for addressing the deficiencies to committee members. When the committee agrees that the student has satisfactorily addressed the deficiencies, the student will submit a document detailing the actions taken and date completed to the DGS and GPC so that a copy may be placed in the student’s file. At that point, the student will be returned to good standing.
