DuoPouch is intended for use in all geographies and environments, as there are no electrical components. The device will be inexpensive and can be used by the appropriate medical providers in any labor situation, since in all places people exist there are babies being born. The current cost to hand-make each device is $2. Once the production line is established, it is estimated that this cost will drop to $0.50. Having a simple, effective, and inexpensive device that can aid in the diagnosis of postpartum hemorrhage will greatly benefit those across the globe and reduce maternal death rates.
The market size for a device that can quantify blood loss in order to diagnose postpartum hemorrhage is large and untapped: for every delivery, there needs to be monitoring in place as postpartum hemorrhaging can occur in any delivery, though there is increased risk for individuals with certain conditions.
United States
In the United States in 2018, 3,791,712 babies were born. Of those births, 2,581,992 were vaginal deliveries and 1,208,176 (31.9%) were Cesarean [1]. It is estimated that postpartum hemorrhage occurs in 3-5% of deliveries in the US, which corresponds to about 150,000 cases per year, with more cases occurring during Cesarean deliveries [2]. This puts the market size for the US at around 2.6 million per year, as that is the number of vaginal deliveries that occur each year.
Global
Globally, it is estimated that there are 140 million babies born each year [3]. This brings the total market size for DuoPouch to approximately 140 million per year, as some babies will be born from a Cesarean section.
The target market for this device is any pregnant person who will deliver a baby vaginally, in addition to providers including OBGYNs, Midwives, family medicine physicians, and Labor and Delivery Nurses.
