The SPRUCE Project
The Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) project was a ten year study of peat bogs conducted in northern Minnesota. Scientists studied a variety of topics, but the main focus of the project was assessing the effect of factors associated with climate change on peat bogs. The study began in 2014,and the final project at the site concluded in 2025. The findings from this study will help to guide current and future conservation efforts in peat bogs across the state.

The Minnesota DNR plays a crucial role in current conservation efforts. The DNR is engaging in a wide array of efforts in order to rewet and restore Minnesota’s peatlands. They received a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to support their efforts. They are also working with tribal leaders to support conservation efforts on tribal lands.
