Casey P. Johnson, PhD

Erick Buko, PhD

Postdoctoral Associate (2021-)

Erick is developing and applying MRI techniques to detect ischemic injury to the femoral head, both at high (3T) and ultrahigh (7T) field strengths. He is also conducting spine research and is interested musculoskeletal imaging in general. During his Ph.D. at the University of Houston, Erick worked on noninvasive quantification of MRI perfusion using intravoxel incoherent motion at Baylor St Luke's Medical Center. He proposed an analytical approach to extract perfusion parameters independent of imaging parameters such as TE with validation performed using a customized phantom and in vivo brain studies. Prior to his PhD, he received his post-graduate diploma in condensed matter and statistical physics at ICTP in Trieste, Italy, where he worked on understanding many-body contributions to the energy of different water topologies.

Suhail Parvaze Pathan, PhD

Postdoctoral Associate (2023-)

Suhail is working on developing strategies to process MRI images, especially at the reconstruction phase, to better depict pathological structures of interest. In his prior role as an external R&D consultant for Philips India, Suhail worked on radiomics analysis and machine learning techniques to decipher the variations in glioblastoma and metastasis due to the presence of infiltrating tumor cells. This work was corroborated with the radiomics analysis of cell line based MRI images and computational models for dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI for brain tumor analysis. In his PhD work at IIT Madras, India, he analyzed cellular structures in auto-immune diseases using fluorescence-based microscopic images. This work included developing a comprehensive pipeline to process, segment, and categorize individual cell nuclei using image processing and machine learning techniques.

Alaina Falck, BA

Veterinary Student Researcher (2022-), Veterinary Summer Scholar (2022, 2023)

Alaina is a current DVM student at the CVM. She is broadly interested in diagnostic imaging and its uses in the early detection of musculoskeletal disease, as well as how characterization of disease pathogenesis can be used to inform treatment decisions and improve patient outcomes. She received her BA in biology from St. Olaf College, where she worked as an undergraduate researcher in a lab studying avian magnetoreception.

Olivia Kim, BS

Veterinary Student Researcher (2023-)

Olivia is a current DVM student at the CVM and is interested in becoming a veterinary radiologist upon graduation. Olivia is especially interested in integrating machine learning into veterinary advanced imaging in hopes to make it ubiquitously available and affordable. She is originally from Seattle, WA where she worked as a veterinary assistant at an ER/specialty hospital for about 3.5 years. She also attended University of Washington and received her B.S. in General Biology. In recent years, she worked alongside Dr. Kari Anderson (DVM-ACVR) to help her develop a radiology teaching tool for the current and future UMN CVM students.

Ashton Amann, BS

DVM/PhD Graduate Student (2023-), Veterinary Summer Scholar (2023, 2024)

Ashton is a current PhD/DVM Dual Degree student at the CVM and is interested in researching new diagnostic imaging techniques for musculoskeletal disease. He is broadly interested in pursuing a career at the intersection of research and teaching in veterinary radiology. Graduating with a BS from the University of Minnesota, Ashton has a background in animal science, chemistry, and business management. He has previously worked in poultry research laboratories focused on vaccine development and is also currently a veterinary technician assistant trained in medical imaging at the VMC.

Nicole Nelson, BS

Veterinary Student Researcher (2023-), Veterinary Summer Scholar (2024)

Nicole is a current DVM student at the CVM and is interested in pursuing a career in both a clinical and educational setting as a veterinary radiologist upon graduation. She graduated from the University of Minnesota CFANS with her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. During her undergraduate studies, she worked alongside Dr. Chris Ober (DVM-ACVR) on her thesis regarding ultrasound findings of abdominal mast cell tumors in felines, achieving magna cum laude honor for her degree. She also worked as a veterinary technician assistant for the past 4 years in medical imaging at the VMC, and has had 3 years of general practice and 1 year of triage/ICU experience as a veterinary assistant at other clinics.

Qian Liu, BAgr

Veterinary Student Researcher (2024-)

Qian is a DVM student at the CVM with plans to become a radiologist in the future, intending to work in academia and teach students in a college. After completing her Bachelor of Agriculture degree at Yangzhou University, where she worked for two years as an undergraduate researcher studying avian adenovirus, she entered veterinary school. Throughout her veterinary education, she participated in a summer scholar program, focusing on Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome.
