Will spend more than 120 hours in the one experience (you may do 30 of these hours before or after the semester of your experience). You can NOT combine two or more experiences to equal 120 hours.
Will be doing things at the experience. Shadowing does not count as doing, as watching someone do something is not hands on experience.
Are completing a project or undertaking activities related to your major field or intended profession.
Have begun your experience no more than 6 months prior to the first day of the course. If you have an experience that you believe will qualify, but you have held it longer than 6 months, can you start a new project or do something new at this position? If yes, then please email Mari Ruddy, mmruddy@umn.edu, to negotiate allowing this previous experience to count.
Will be supervised by someone in your intended profession who is not a member of your family.
Will be able to attend the required virtual class meetings for the course.
If you have any doubt about whether your internship/professional experience will be approved, ask the Internship Coordinator, Mari Ruddy, before accepting your experience. mmruddy@umn.edu.
You must have access to the course site on Canvas throughout your experience.
Your internship supervisor must be able to respond in English to emails and evaluations.
Check the GPS Alliance website for countries that require pre-approval for student international travel.
Register your international travel with the Student International Travel Registry. Through that process, you will complete an online health and safety module through Canvas and receive University-approved international medical insurance.
CFAN 3096 and CFAN 4096 are essentially the same course content. Both courses have you reflect on your internship/professional experience as it relates to who you are in the work world and what you hope to do in your career after you graduate from college.
The main difference between the courses is the delivery system.
CFAN 3096 happens alongside you doing your internship/professional experience.
CFAN 4096 happens somewhat alongside you doing your internship/professional experience (the prerequisite) and then you reflect during the fall semester.
If your internship or professional experience takes place during the summer, take one of the following courses.
Both courses use the same curriculum and have essentially the same work load.
This is an ideal option for students who will have a heavy course load in the fall and want to complete their Experiential Learning credit while doing the summer internship/professional experience.
Summer tuition costs apply for this option. Contact OneStop for details about summer tuition costs for 1 credit.
See this link for dates and times for the summer session(s) of CFAN 3096 that are offered.
