About

John Carmody - A Life in Sustainability was exhibited in the HGA Gallery at Ralph Rapson Hall on the University of Minnesota campus in the fall of 2022. This website expands the reach of the exhibit beyond Minnesota and into the future sharing the story of John’s remarkable career as an environmental activist and systems designer. His story runs parallel with the history of the environmental movement in Minnesota and around the world from its roots in the 60s environmental conservation to present day.

The exhibit was curated by John’s colleagues and we are indebted to everyone who added to the story through interviews and testimonials. In particular, we would like to than those who knew John during his early career or partnered with him on landmark projects, including Rich Carter FAIA, Jito Colman, Tom Ellison AIA, Tom McDougall, Sam Taylor, Steve Selkowitz, and Janet Streff.

Finally, thank you to John’s children Kate and Patrick Carmody for access to John’s papers and memorabilia. Thank you to John’s wife, Lyn Hornes, for her generosity in support of the opening reception.
