Building a Canvas Site from Scratch
Contact cbs-rlt @umn.edu for help developing a Canvas site. They can build most of the course for you so you can focus on inserting the content.
Recommendations for Your Canvas Site
As much as possible, provide instructions and resources where students need them. This could mean putting links in a week, or putting links in the description for an assignment itself.
Develop a plan for how you would like to organize your Modules
Most instructors will find it easiest to have a home page and then organize the content in modules. Breaking up modules by weeks is usually easiest for students. Modules also allows you to force students to go through content in a specific order, controlling what they see based on what they've done.
Students prefer instructors use Modules organized by time rather than type of assignment.
We recommend using Google Drive to create and store your content and link it into your course (Google and Canvas: Making Your Course Easy to Update with Live Links). If you choose to store files on Canvas, you may want to create an online file library within Canvas, so review How do I use Files as an instructor?
