Penn State and the University of Maryland librarians and geospatial specialists represent the easternmost Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) member universities participating in — and contributing digitized and cataloged map and GIS data to — the BTAA Geospatial Data Project and its Geoportal.

Scholars and researchers have a new way to find and compare geospatial data and maps: the Big Ten Academic Alliance Geoportal. The geoportal allows searching across thousands of records of openly available geographic information system (GIS) datasets, web services, and digitized historical maps from multiple data clearinghouses and library catalogs — with an interface that makes discovery easy for experienced researchers as well as neophytes.

The Big Ten Academic Alliance Geospatial Data Project has launched the Big Ten Academic Alliance Geoportal. Collectively managed by a task force of librarians and geospatial specialists at 10 member institutions, thousands of metadata records have been aggregated and edited to connect scholars across the Big Ten to geospatial data resources, including GIS datasets, web services, and digitized historical maps from multiple data clearinghouses and library catalogs.
