Board members

Anita Kwashie, President

Anita is a 4th year PhD student in the Clinical Science and Psychopathology Research program. She studies the neuroscience of cognitive mechanisms, and their contribution to functioning deficits in serious mental illness. As AMS president, Anita aims to promote antiracism and democratization initiatives within the scientific community. A Ghanaian Brit and honorary Jersey Girl, Anita possesses a confusing accent and takes pub trivia more seriously than she probably should.

Malaney Young, Vice President

Malaney is a 5th year PhD Student in Biomedical Engineering. She studies pathological protein interactions in neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease. Malaney joined AMS to promote a diverse and inclusive community within STEM. She values the importance of providing a safe space for underrepresented students to be themselves and feel supported in their academic/career goals. Malaney is an animal lover and avid consumer of vegan desserts!



Amal Aaden, Treasurer

Amal is a second year undergraduate student in The College of Biological Sciences. She is studying Cellular and Organismal Physiology with a minor in Communications. She joined AMS to promote diversity in the STEM field and contribute to the multicultural community of scientists at the U. Amal has lived in three states and enjoys spending time in nature hiking.



Mia Tran, Communication Chair

Mia is a second year undergraduate student, majoring in Biomedical Engineering. She is an international student from Vietnam who has been enjoying connecting with other students and professors of different cultural backgrounds. She joined AMS to advocate for diversity and equity in the science field and to learn from all the awesome individuals on the executive board. She loves wandering around the campus to take pictures especially during sunset and hanging out with friends over Starbuck coffee or bubble tea.



Jonas Alvarez, Outreach Coordinator

Jonas is a rising 3rd year PhD student in the Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics program. He studies the relationship between liver metabolism and circadian rhythms and how it impacts health and lifespan. Jonas joined AMS as a way to connect with communities through science and build public interest in science-related topics. Jonas is a New York City native and is of Dominican heritage. He loves to cook (especially Dominican dishes) and loves biking.



Navpreet Kaur, Professional Development Chair

Navpreet is a fourth year Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Pharmaceutics, University of Minnesota. Her thesis research focuses on the drug product development of caffeine, indomethacin and levothyroxine. Before joining to the University of Minnesota, Navpreet completed her Bachelors and Masters in Pharmaceutical Sciences in India.

Navpreet is serving on numerous student bodies at the University of Minnesota such as the Council of Graduate Students (COGS) and Council of International Graduate Student (CIGS, President). She has also served on the College of Pharmacy’s Graduate Education Policy Committee (GEPC) as a graduate student representative.
