"Let us remember that animals are not mere resources for human consumption. They are splendid beings in their own right, who have evolved alongside us as co-inheritors of all the beauty and abundance of life on this planet."
— Marc Bekoff
The Animal Legal Defense Fund Student Chapter at Minnesota Law is a registered student organization dedicated to providing a forum for education, advocacy, and scholarship aimed at protecting the lives and advancing the interests of animals through the legal system, and raising the profile of animal law.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is animal law?
Animal law refers generally to the body of law that considers or affects nonhuman animals. This includes case law, statutory law, rules and regulations, and so on. The field of animal law itself has a variety of specialties and ties to other areas of the legal system. For a more in-depth explanation, check out the Animal Law 101 article from ALDF.
What if I'm interested in practicing another type of law?
Great! We would love to hear your perspective, too. Animal law is not only relevant for those directly involved in the practice. It is an evolving field that directly impacts other practices, from consumer protection, to government administration, to criminal justice, and beyond. If you're curious about how animal law might relate to your specific interests or career goals, come to a meeting and see what we're about! (Or send your questions to aldf@umn.edu.)
Are you a part of the national Animal Legal Defense Fund?
ALDF at UMN is made up of Minnesota Law students that are affiliated with the Animal Legal Defense Fund and share its mission. We are entirely student-run, and do not speak for the Animal Legal Defense Fund. However, benefit from their support and work closely with their attorneys and staff to provide effective and meaningful impact for students and animals.
Are you open to undergraduate students?
Unfortunately, our membership is limited to registered students at the University of Minnesota Law School. However, there are still plenty of ways for undergraduates to get involved! There are animal welfare organizations on campus, or if you are interested in specific opportunities please contact aldf@umn.edu for additional resources.
