The University of Minnesota Twin Cities School of Social Work is located on the University of Minnesota St Paul Campus. Peters Hall is at 1404 Gortner Ave.
The MSW Advising and Registration Guide provides and overview of which classes you will register for during your first semester in the program.
Students register through the Academic Tab in MyU. There is information in the Registration Guide as well as on the OneStop Website. Registration times can be found in MyU.
MSW courses are scheduled all day Thursday through Saturday. Some courses are also offered on Monday through Wednesday evenings. MSW students will not be able to take courses exclusively during weekday business hours, or exclusively during the evening and Saturday hours.
Often, students can create a course schedule that meets their needs. However, all students will have at least some evening courses, and most students will have Saturday courses, during their time as a graduate student.
Students completing practicum placements are generally expected to be in practicum on Mondays through Wednesdays. Some placements offer evening and weekend hours, but almost every placements will require some time in the agency during regular Monday through Friday business hours.
Full Program students start in the fall semester.
Some Advanced Standing students start in the summer and some start in the fall. When you start depends on your specialization and when you plan to complete your practicum.
Clinical Mental Health (CMH) students must complete SW 8451: Assessment & Engagement in Clinical Social Work before entering into their specialized practicum placement. CMH Advanced Standing students have two options.
The first is to start the program in the summer and complete this SW 8451 prior to entering into a fall-to-spring placement. A sample schedule for AS CMH summer starts is available below.
The second is to complete SW 8451 in the fall and begin a placement the following summer. A sample schedule for CMH fall starts is available below.
While Clinical Mental Health Students must complete required coursework prior to entering practicum placements, this is not true for students in other specializations. Students in other specializations should plan to begin the MSW program in the fall semester. They may choose to enter the practicum placements in the fall and complete fall-to-spring placements, or can wait and enter their practicum placements the following summer.

Many individuals considering going back to school are worried about how they will pay for their degree. There are several options for UMN MSW students.
The University of Minnesota and the School of Social Work offer scholarships and fellowships for MSW students. Each spring, the MSW program sends the SSW funding application to incoming and current students.
Another option is to take out student loans. Incoming MSW students can review the steps for applying for loans on the UMN OneStop website. After your graduate, you may be eligible for student loan forgiveness. More information about student loan forgiveness options for social workers can be found on the studentaid.gov and National Association for Social Workers websites.
Some professional organizations also provide funding for students pursuing careers in social work, such as the Minnesota Social Service Association and the Minnesota School Social Workers Association.
MSW students can also apply for Graduate Research Assistant positions. To find out about GRA positions, check out the next section Graduate Research Assistant Positions.
The UMN Graduate School also has information about funding opportunities. To find out more about funding, as well as fellowship opportunities, visit the UMN Graduate School website.
Graduate students are able to apply for federal loans by completing the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.ed.gov.

College of Education and Human Development Graduate Assistantships
Students who are registered for at least 6 credits each semester are generally eligible to apply for a GRA position.
These positions are competitive, and usually cover anywhere from 50-100% of tuition, pay an hourly wage, and in some situations pay for health insurance. More information about GRA positions can be found at the Graduate Assistant Employment Office. website.
How to Find a GRA Position
Students apply for these positions as they would a job. The MSW program does not hire GRAs directly, and we are unable to recommend students for these positions.
When the MSW program becomes aware of a position, we share these postings with students. However, the best way for students to find and secure a position is to search through the UMN HR page.
Additional information can also be found on the Office of Human Resoruces site.
Social Work students are expected to abide by the same ethical standards as professional social workers. The documents below contain information about expectations for UMN Twin Cities MSW students.
The School of Social Work requires that students use information technology to support practice and scholarship. You will receive an official University e-mail address from the Graduate School. All SSW graduate students must have access to the Internet. If you do not have personal computer access, you can use the computer labs on campus.
Minnesota law requires all students born after December 31, 1956, who enroll in a state college or university to be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, measles, mumps, and rubella. See the Academic Health Service page for important instructions on immunizations for U.S. and international students.

UMN Twin Cities MSW Curriculum Overview and Registration Information Sessions
Fall 2023 class registration begins in mid-April.
