For Prospective Students
Prepare for the Fair!
We are excited for you to attend the 2023 U of MN Graduate Programs Fair. Staff, faculty and representatives from across our Twin Cities and Duluth campuses are looking forward to meeting you!
TIPS ON HOW TO PREPARE
Here are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare to attend the fair, as well as suggested questions to consider asking program representatives. If you have any questions in preparation for the fair, please feel free to reach out to the Graduate School Diversity Office at gsdorecruit@umn.edu.
Plan which graduate programs you’d like to speak with (see a list of participating graduate programs here).
Come prepared (and do your homework). Program websites are a great source of information, so be sure to take a look prior to the fair. When speaking with program representatives, have them reiterate and explain program information in their own words.
Dress comfortably and appropriately.
Celebrate yourself and your accomplishments! Now is a great time to "brag" about the wonderful things you've been up to.
Take initiative. The fair has drop-in hours so, at times, you may be the only person seeking information at a representative's table. Take advantage of the opportunity – introduce yourself, share what you are currently studying, and what your graduate school/research interests are (program representatives are excited to meet you!).
Explore! There will be representatives from many graduate programs, campus resource centers, and graduate student organizations waiting to talk to you. Take this opportunity to connect with those you are interested in, and to learn more about those with which you might be less familiar.
Be inquisitive and ask questions! Here are a few to help you start a conversation:
What are you looking for in an ideal candidate?
What do you look for in assessing an applicant’s qualifications?
Can you tell me more about the application process for this program?
What are my research opportunities within this program? What funding opportunities are available? What criteria are used to award scholarships?
At what point in the admissions process can I expect to receive information about aid, loans, and scholarships?
What types of teaching assistantships are available?
When is the application deadline?
Can you tell me more about the curriculum?
Are there standardized tests I am required/suggested to take?
Who can I reach out to if I have additional questions?
Are there any opportunities for prospective students to engage with current students and/or faculty?
How would you describe the culture of your program?
What are the program’s goals and specialties?
I am a [junior, senior]. What are things I should be thinking about and/or doing now to help me prepare for this program?
What overall support is provided to students throughout the program?
What is the best way to stay connected with you/the program until I am ready to apply?
Thank each program representative you speak with for their time.
Follow up! Be sure to ask who you can contact if you have additional questions.
