How are 4-H members selected to be a part of the Auction?Youth are allowed to enter one entry into the auction after receiving a Champion, Reserve Champion, or Blue Ribbon. Members have the option of selling the animal or participating to receive a premium only (maintaining the ownership of the animal). Any sale of animals following the auction is between the 4-H family and the buyer. It is not handled by Wright County 4-H.
What is the purpose of the auction?
  • Promote the development of young people
  • Teach youth skills in livestock production
  • Promote the importance of the livestock industry to rural and urban businesses
  • Promote quality meat production
  • Support Wright County 4-H Programs (25% of proceeds go to support Wright County 4-H animal science programs)

How are prices determined?Everyone in the sale is guaranteed at least the base price, which is based on Thursday’s market prices or set by the auction committee, for poultry and rabbit. If no bids are received, the exhibitor will automatically take back the project. 75% of profit above market price will go to the 4-H member and 25% of profit above market will go to the Wright County 4-H Auction Fund. If the 25% to the Auction Fund is less than $2.00, the 4-H’ers will be assessed the difference to cover auction costs. What about Buyers/Bidders?Without buyers, there's no sale. Participants are expected to recruit at least three potential buyers and have the buyers complete a bidder agreement form prior to the auction. These forms need to be turned in to Mick Boll at the auction desk at the County Fair by Friday. Copies of the buyer form can be obtained below or at http://z.umn.edu/wcauction Absolutely no "buy bidding” or bidding by parents/guardians on their children's animals will be allowed.

Registration

All 4-H’ers need to pre-register for the auction by July 22 online below. We ask that you also provide us with a cell phone number where you can be reached during the fair. Considering it is not possible to know if an animal will qualify for the auction until the show and state fair placings could also influence your decision on which project to enter, we ask that you pre-register any and all animals that you would potentially be interested in showing and then check in at the auction desk in the 4-H General Exhibit Building as soon as possible after your show to verify which animal you will sell.

At the Fair

Weigh-In Schedule

Exhibitors need to be with their animal at weigh-in. Every animal will be weighed and needs to meet minimum weights of; 1000 lbs. for beef and dairy, 900 lbs. for beef heifers, 200 lbs. for barrow swine, 190 lbs. for gilts, 100 lbs. for market lambs, and 40 lbs. for market goats. Weights are announced at the sale. Check the weighing schedule for your species earlier in this book.

Sale Order

Your position in the sale is determined by a drawing before the sale. Sale order will be posted in sale arena. 4-H’ers present their own livestock or poultry in ring.

Clean Up After Sale

All auction participants are asked to be on hand to help clean the ring after the sale.

Loading Out Sunday Night:

All delivery of sale animals will be between buyer and seller only! Animals will not be released until 7 p.m. Sale animals that are shipped will load out at 6 p.m.

After The Fair

Thank You Notes

Be sure to write a thank you note to the buyer after the sale! This is very important to the success of future sales. The Auction Committee will provide a picture and a thank you card to each 4-H'er to use to thank your buyer for their participation in the auction.
