SI 552: Technology and Accessibility

What is Technology and Accessibility?

In SI 552: Technology and Accessibility, clients present case studies in four areas of accessibility in technology (mobility, hearing, sight, and cognitive) to master's-level graduate students, who spend four weeks per study brainstorming unique, workable solutions to challenges around technology and accessibility.

Deliverables

What do clients receive for participating in this course?

The deliverable will vary depending on the case study, but may include any of the following:

  • Voice interface
  • Visual assistance
  • A website or tool
  • Tangible prototype for haptics

Projects

What kinds of projects are appropriate for this course?

Ideal projects may have some of the following characteristics:

  • Accessibility and technology focused, but go beyond web design/development
  • Focus on one of the disability topics covered in the class (mobility, hearing, sight, cognitive)
  • Short-term (scoped to be completed within 4 weeks)

How many projects are selected for this course?

  • Fall 2019: 3 case studies selected

Timeline

SI 552 occurs in the Fall semester (September–December)

June–August

  • Client submits project idea
  • Client Engagement Team (CET) reviews project idea and requests full project proposal
  • CET works with client to scope and refine proposal

September

  • Faculty choose proposals to present to students
  • Students choose their project

September–October

  • Students begin project

December

  • Students finish project and provide deliverable(s) to client
