We develop model-based systems engineering (MBSE) solutions for various engineering systems (e.g., Design and manufacturing, biomedical engineering, environmental solutions, etc.) that put digital modeling tools and techniques instead of documents at the center of system design, analysis, and operations.
Our MBSE solutions consist of three main elements, namely digital models, system thinking, and system engineering. Our center offers courses, research opportunities, and resources related to MBSE. Faculty members of the center working in digital engineering also offer specialized guidance and opportunities for hands-on experience with MBSE tools and methodologies.
In this research, we implement and demonstrate rapid engineering change management using MBSE approach. It incorporates a link between relevant system parameters and the domain-specific models and by that allows the quick estimation of how the requested change impacts.
When the domain specific models are fully parameterized an automated execution of these models from within the system model is possible which enables a semi- automated or even fully automated execution of engineering changes. The proposed research has been demonstrated using a use case for a requirement change request of a model vehicle component.
Through the MBSE-based approach to perform quick estimation of the requested change impacts, it significantly reduce the requried effort for protopying and the required number of design iteration. This leads to a reduction in material consumption and a reduction in energy usage and thus contributes to the goal of sustainability.
