The University of Michigan Future Public Health Leaders Program (Michigan FPHLP) is a 10-week residential program at the University of Michigan School of Public Health designed to encourage underrepresented college students to consider careers in public health.

In cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Office of Minority Health and Health Equity’s (OMHHE), FPHLP offers a combination of enrichment and field experience to its participants. Michigan FPHLP is one of five public health summer programs under the CDC John Lewis Scholars Program.

MICHIGAN FPHLP OBJECTIVES:

  • To promote and introduce public health careers to undergraduate college students

  • Improve cultural and linguistic competency through diversity in the health-related workforce

  • Strengthen and broaden leadership for addressing health equity at all levels

  • Increased awareness of the significance of health disparities, their impact on the nation, and the actions necessary to improve health outcomes for racial, ethnic, and other populations

An 8-week summer residential internship with the Research for Indigenous Social Action and Equity Center (RISE) at the University of Michigan. At RISE, we aim to improve the understanding and treatment of Indigenous Peoples throughout society. ISRP offers the opportunity to join our mission to improve the lives of millions of Indigenous people through research. We focus on community building and provide mentorship by Indigenous scholars. Our program is open to students who are 18 or older, especially those early in their studies who may not have access to other research opportunities. Students who join the ISRP program will receive a stipend in addition to all lodging, travel, and research materials paid.

The University of Michigan Interdisciplinary REU Program (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) in the Structure and Function of Proteins is designed to provide undergraduate students with a 10-week research experience in the areas of biochemistry, biophysics, cheminformatics, computational chemistry, enzymology, marine biology, molecular biology, and plant biology. The research projects featured in this program all involve studies of the structure and function of proteins.

In addition to the research experience, students will participate in a series of weekly enrichment seminars focused on scientific communication, graduate school admissions, and career options in STEM.

Participants will receive a stipend and housing along with meal and travel allowances.

This three-month immersion program runs from late May through early August and supports up to 18 students. The experience is designed to engage students in translational and health disparities research and inspire them to choose a career focused on research.

Students will participate in hands on research projects with U-M research teams. They will also learn the fundamentals of research through individual and team-based learning experiences. The program may serve as an internship for students who need to fulfill such requirements.

The Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Training (MHRT) Program funded by the National Institutes of Health seeks to increase the number of underrepresented students trained in health disparities research and entering biomedical behavioral health careers.

MHRT at the University of Michigan School of Public Health works with undergraduate, post baccalaureate, masters, and PhD students to increase knowledge and research health disparities training within the global context focusing on child health, maternal health and global health.

Program activities consist of:

  • Research preparation that includes training in health equity, cultural humility, and project-specific research training.

  • 12-week research field experience (longer experience for postdoctoral trainees) with established faculty to develop and/or strengthen health disparities research skills.

  • Post experience opportunities for facilitation of research presentations and manuscripts.

  • Michigan MHRT has project sites in Chile, Dearborn (Michigan), India, Indonesia, Kenya, Fiji, Thailand, and Uganda. Project sites may vary each year.

This 10 week program, provides undergraduate students with a research experience in the areas of behavioral and systems neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, molecular and cellular neuroscience, developmental neuorscience, sensory neuroscience, computational neuroscience, and clinical neuroscience. UM-SMART Undergraduate Summer Research Program (MSTP MD/PhD)

UM-SMART is designed for undergraduate students who have an interest in obtaining a combined MD/PhD degree leading to a career in academic medicine as a physician-scientist performing basic research relevant to human health and disease. As a UM-SMART summer research fellow, students work full-time in a basic research laboratory under the mentorship of a research faculty member.

The goal of the UM-SMART program is to help students decide if a career as a physician-scientist is right for them, and to enhance competitiveness when applying to MD/PhD programs. This 10-week program is aimed at students who have some amount of basic and mechanistic research experience related to medicine and are interested in gaining more experience to advance their career goals.
