Students Organize for Syria (SOS) is a non-profit organization with chapters at universities throughout the US. We work to educate and raise student awareness about the situation in Syria as well as support local refugees.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Students Organize for Syria at the University of Michigan recognized the hardships refugee communities faced during this time of difficulty, especially for those who were battling language barriers, access to resources, and difficulty in assimilation. Starting in Fall 2020, SOS conducted individual virtual tutoring sessions for refugee students and has continued since. In 2023, we partnered with SOS chapters at Wayne State University and the University of Michigan - Dearborn to create the Refugee and Immigrant Support for Education (RISE) program to reach more communities in need.
Our program assists K-12 students with homework and provides ESL tutoring and conversational English instruction. A tutor is matched with a refugee student and they meet weekly throughout the school year. We strive to provide the resources our students need to succeed in school and in their transition to life in the U.S.
