About Us

Each semester, SOAR moderates an open discussion that focuses on a particular topic relating to addiction. This discussion between an interdisciplinary panel of invited speakers and attendees creates a setting that benefits all participants. While staying home and staying safe, we hope you can join us in an online format this fall. More details to come soon!

PURPOSE: At its core, science can evoke the curiosity of any individual. However, this is only possible when the subject matter is presented in an engaging and well-understood manner. As a student organization at UofM, SOAR provides community outreach on topics relating to addiction and addiction research. There are many misconceptions when it comes to substance use, and SOAR aims to make unbiased scientific information more accessible to our surrounding communities.

VISION: We are a group of interdisciplinary (scientists/students/professors) that share the common goal of scientific outreach. During the Fall of 2017, SOAR was founded by students in the departments of Pharmacology and Psychology, and our membership has since grown to include undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students across UofM. As our membership grows, we hope to destigmatize the topic of addiction and continue expanding our outreach capabilities.

MISSION: Our mission is to engage members of our surrounding communities in discussions that foster a greater appreciation for scientific literacy.

AIMS: We aim to host public events that provide attendees with the opportunity to educate themselves on topics that may not be readily accessible. Additionally, we aim to encourage both high-school and undergraduate students to explore the possibilities that exist for pursuing STEM further.

FUNCTIONS OF THE ORGANIZATION: Each semester, SOAR moderates an open discussion that focuses on a particular topic relating to addiction. This discussion between an interdisciplinary panel of invited speakers and attendees creates a setting that benefits all participants. This is one of the many recurring events that we orchestrate to promote community involvement and scientific outreach.
