Using SIMmersion Simulations

Information Sheet

The following contains tips and tricks of use.

How the School Will Use SIMmersion Simulations

SIMmersion simulations are available to all students, faculty, and field instructors.

Students will utilize the simulations in courses and at field to practice and develop their skills.

Students will have access to SIMmersion for 2 years from their start of program. Field instructors can request access for 4 months at a time.

*Note: some simulations will ask you you to select a gender before opening the online simulation. Note that this is referring to the voice over heard by you when selecting a statement (in other words, which speaking voice would you like to hear) and is not requesting you to enter in your own gender. Currently, SIMmersion only offers a male or female option.

In Classes

  • Many courses at the School of Social Work will utilize the simulations to foster practice in specific intervention models. The simulations often are used as a supplement to coursework and are an opportunity to demonstrate your skill development.

  • Courses may have different expectations for how you complete the simulations, however they should all allow you to complete simulations at your ability and provide assistance.

  • Students will have up to 13 simulations available and can complete simulation trials within each. Trials will be scored from 0-100% competency in utilizing the intervention technique.

* Note: students and instructors should focus on learning goals and not performance goals when using the simulations in courses. Learning cannot happen without failure.

Set Expectations for Yourself

On average, students need to complete 12 sessions to obtain a 90% score.

Take time to read all of the introductory material before beginning the simulation.

Download and review your transcripts to see where you can improve, and share this with your instructor or field supervisor to get some feedback.

And remember, the long-term objective is to reach a high score consistently over time -- even in life you'll have good sessions and you'll have bad sessions. Just keep trying.

Accessibility Note

If you would like to view text or a transcript as the virtual client speaks, disallow the full-screen video under Audio & Videos on the Menu Options at the top corner. This will allow you to view the transcript as the client responds to you.
