Society for Conservation Biology at the University of Michigan

The University of Michigan chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology strives to develop interdisciplinary knowledge, skills, and community for members pursuing professional careers in the field of biodiversity conservation. We also aim to provide a forum for member involvement in local and global conservation issues. Our activities include events such as guest lectures, field trips, and career chats. This group is open to anyone in the UMich community.

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

The SCB University of Michigan chapter is open to all University of Michigan community members regardless of race, color, national origin, age, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, religion, height, weight, or veteran status. Just as biodiversity is fundamental to ecosystem functioning, we believe that a diversity of people and perspectives is critical to the success of conservation science. Here, our goal is to foster an inclusive community with equitable access to the activities and resources that our chapter provides.

Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge that the University of Michigan resides in the traditional homelands of the Anishinaabek, including the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi, as well as Wyandot peoples. Furthermore, the field of conservation biology has historically benefited and continues to benefit from the colonization and exploitation of indigenous people and lands. As practitioners, we have a responsibility to not only understand this history, but also work towards making the future more equitable and sustainable for both people and the environment.Â
