Who Are We?

SafeMD is a community of medical students affiliated with the University of Michigan Medical school who are dedicated to creating a community in which people are aware of sexual assault and actively work to prevent it, and in which survivors are strongly supported. We achieve these goals through education, leadership, and advocacy

SafeMD at UMMS

SafeMD was established at the University of Michigan Medical School in 2015 by medical students committed to increasing knowledge about sexual assault and its prevention, and to empowering each other to support survivors as both community members and as future healthcare providers. To further this mission, safeMD at UMMS hosts the following events each year:

  • A 1 hour introduction to safeMD, consent, and resources for survivors of sexual assault and interpersonal violence (IPV)

  • Three 1 hour presentations focused on increasing the recognition and awareness of sexual violence as well as the resources available for survivors of sexual violence

  • An interactive, standardized-patient workshop to practice taking a history from a survivor of sexual assault or IPV
