My dissertation analyzes what were the causes of the disappearance of the feudal economic system and how the emergence of modern, more efficient property rights institutions affected economic outcomes. The first chapter of my dissertation examines the role of market integration in promoting the separation of landlord and serf economies, the so-called land settlements in the 19th century Hungary. The second chapter looks at how the disappearance of the feudal economic structures affected economic activity; land use and agricultural income. The third chapter examines the effect of fiscal legibility, the role of cadastral surveys on land use and economic development.
