I know many of you are trying to schedule appointments and are not able to find anything until the end of the semester. This is because Allie is the only advisor for all 500+ of you at the moment. We are trying to accommodate all of the appointment requests to discuss scheduling before registration. Please see below for the additional opportunities for you to connect with advising prior to the end of the semester.
BME Peer Advisors
We have 3 AMAZING Peer Advisors helping the Student Services Team this year. Peer Advisors now have appointment availability and you can book an appointment with them here.
Things Peer Advisors can be helpful with:
Going over/helping create a 4-year plan
Discussing what courses are good to take for certain paths
Looking at audits and discussing which courses are good to take next
Things Peer Advisors cannot help with:
Adjusting an audit
Letting you know if a particular course will count or not
Discussing graduate school applications/SUGS
Asking for a course to be moved on your audit
Discussing dual-degrees
Whether or not you will get into/get off the waitlist for a course
As registration is approaching, Peer Advisors will be very helpful in helping look at course plans and audits. With appointment slots tight, I encourage you to consider chatting with a Peer Advisor regarding general registration questions.
Virtual Drop-In Advising
We will be hosting a number of Virtual Drop-In Advising events to allow students to ask questions regarding registration. These are meant to be 5-10 minutes MAXIMUM. This is NOT for you to work on your four-year plan or discuss study abroad. These will simply be to quickly go over your audit and review course selection for next semester. Please come prepared having looked at your audit (see steps below), and have a few ideas of courses that you may want to take.
Virtual Drop-Ins will take place on the following dates and times:
Thursday, November 7 from 9:30 am - 11:00 am
Friday, November 8 from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Wednesday, November 13 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Thursday, November 14 from 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
All of the drop-in queues will open 10 minutes prior to the starting time. The queue will close 20 minutes before the ending time so that we can make sure we get to everybody who is in line.
The drop-in queue can be accessed here: https://officehours.it.umich.edu/queue/1649. This will be the link for all virtual drop-ins.
Advising Availability and Emails (IMPORTANT)
Allie will be out of town and out of the office from November 18 until after Thanksgiving break. We know that this is less than ideal with registration happening right around then. To ensure you are able to get your questions answered, please reach out to BME-advising@umich.edu. This will ensure your questions are seen by the entire Student Services Team and you will be able to receive a response sooner and will not have to wait for Allie to get back from her vacation.
*This is also good practice in general. With the influx of emails Allie is receiving, it is helpful to send general questions to the BME General email. :)
BME 450
If you are planning to take BME 450 in the Winter term, PLEASE FILL OUT THIS FORM. There are 2 sections of 450 next semester and we need to place students in sections to ensure that they are evenly balanced. The more responses we get prior to registration, the earlier we can let you know your section and plan your schedule accordingly. In the form, let us know any scheduling restrictions or plans, so we can take those into consideration when placing you in your section.
If you are planning to take 450 next year, please note that the Fall 450 and Winter 450 distinctions will no longer apply. BME 450 will be the same in both Fall and Winter and include a combination of chemical/biological projects, as well as mechanical/med devices. The prerequisites for BME 450 will be BME 458 and BME 350. So if you are planning to take BME 450 in the fall, you will need to have BOTH BME 458 and BME 350 completed prior to then.
Registration Best Practices
Not sure how to approach registration? Look at your Audit! How do you do that?
Login to Wolverine Access
Go to your Student Center
In the drop-down menu on the left side, choose "Academic Requirements"
Click "Detail Report PDF" on the next page
You now have your audit. Anything marked in RED needs to be completed still!
If you aren't sure what classes can count for Engineering Expertise, Cross Disciplinary, or Profession in Practice requirements, view our Curriculum Guide! If there is a course you want to take to satisfy one of these requirements and it isn't on the curriculum guide, please reach out and confirm whether or not it will count!
Registration FAQ
Have a registration question that wasn't answered in this newsletter? Check out our registration FAQ! This is usually updated throughout registration with common questions we get from students. It also has some helpful tips and tricks for backpacking and registration. Check it out here!
Overrides
Need an override for a course? If the course is not a BME course, you will need to contact the department that offers the course and ask them about their override policies. BME advisors can only process overrides for BME courses. If you are requesting an override for IOE 333, please email ioe.overrides@umich.edu. Please note that you must have completed BME 241 in order to be able to enroll in the course.
If it is a BME course, please fill out the override request form (it will become available on Monday, November 11). All override requests are handled via this form, so you do not need to stop by the Academic Services Office or send us an email. Please note that we receive several override requests once registration begins, they are handled in the order they’re received, and we process override requests as soon as possible. Please note that professors can not and do not provide overrides.
