Q: What is Raise Scholars?
A: Raise Scholars is a sponsored pre-college program designed to support prospective students with a strong interest in attending the University of Michigan. Participating students from select partner high schools receive ongoing support throughout the U-M application process and participate in high-impact experiences. Students also have the opportunity to connect to the U-M network and explore multiple top-notch campus resources available to U-M students.
Q: What is the Raise Scholars Summer Experience?
A: The Raise Scholars Summer Experience is an all-expenses-paid residential summer program for rising seniors at select Metro Detroit schools. This immersive program is designed to support prospective students with a strong interest in attending the University of Michigan as they begin the college application process. Students will spend 4 days and 3 nights on the U-M Ann Arbor campus, receiving assistance with college application preparation and exploring top-notch resources.
Q: Can anyone participate in the Raise Scholars Summer Experience?
A: Participating students must be recommended by their high school principal or counselor, be a rising high school senior, attend a select CEO partner school in Detroit or Southfield, MI, and earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Q: Is the Raise Summer Experience Free?
A: Yes! The U-M Center for Educational Outreach covers all program expenses (transportation, food, and lodging included). Students are also welcome to bring money for personal spending.
Q: What should I pack for the overnight campus visit?
A: We recommend students bring their own toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, etc.). Linens (Twin XL sheet set + 1 standard pillow + pillow case, towel, and washcloth) will be provided, but students can bring any other linens they’d like to feel most comfortable.
Q: What residence hall will I stay in?
A: We will stay in Moher-Jordan Hall, 200 Observatory Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-2035. You can learn more about the residence hall by clicking HERE
Q: Will I be able to choose my roommate?
A: All students will share a room with another Raise Scholar during the summer experience. However, you will have an opportunity to share the names of the people from your school that you wish to room with on your student profile. While we can't guarantee that we can honor your request, we will try our best. We will assign you a roommate if you do not have a room preference. Either way, we will make sure that everyone is comfortable. Only two people will be assigned to a room. There are no single-occupancy rooms.
Q: Is food provided during the residential summer camp?
A: Yes! Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided in a campus dining hall.
Q: Is there a curfew during the residential summer camp?
A: All Raise Scholars students will be back in their rooms by 10:00 p.m. every night.
Q: Is there Wi-Fi/internet during the overnight campus visit?
A: Yes, students will have Wi-Fi access in all campus buildings, including the residence and dining hall.
Q: Will I need to bring a laptop with me?
A: A personal computer is not required to participate in sessions. Students work in computer labs during writing workshops. However, students are welcome to bring a personal device with them, as there will be opportunities to work on their essays outside of the working sessions. Students are responsible for the safety of their property.
Q: I’m a parent/guardian, can I drop off or pick up my student after the overnight campus visit?
A: Students must be dropped off at the U-M Detroit Center the morning of June 22nd and will arrive at the Ann Arbor campus through the transportation provided by the Center for Educational Outreach. However, parents/guardians can pick up their student after the summer residential program, if they choose. Parents/guardians must notify the Raise Scholars staff if they plan on picking up their student. Please email RaiseScholars@umich.edu if you will provide your student with transportation after the campus visit.
Q: Do I need to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination for the overnight campus visit?
A: The University of Michigan no longer requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination for visitors to stay on campus. Face masks are also not required to be worn on campus, but a student may choose to wear a face mask if they prefer.
Q: What if the student gets COVID-19 during the overnight residential summer camp?
A: An attendee who is infected will be required to stay in isolation housing on campus or may be relocated to a hotel or another off-campus place. If they prefer, they can leave campus entirely with a parent or guardian and go home, if the program ends before their isolation period is over. If the program continues after their isolation period concludes, the attendee may rejoin the program and return to on-campus housing.
Q: I still have questions. How can I reach the Raise Scholars team?
