I'm Xavier, a first-year University of Michigan College of LSA student. As a queer person with a commitment to advocating for voices in the queer community, I'm passionate about challenging societal norms and making space for underrepresented communities.
In WRITING 160: Multilingual Writing, I discovered more about myself and my connection to language than I ever expected. This project became an opportunity to explore a topic that has shaped my identity and activism. I wanted to create something that not only educates but also shifts the narrative around language that is often categorized as "vulgar," but is, in reality, vital to understanding queer spaces and history.
With experience in building queer spaces and raising awareness about sexual health in my community, I thought it was time to turn my attention to the power of language. By sharing its relevance I hope to make steps toward dismantling the stigma surrounding it and share a greater appreciation for its role in queer identity.

This project celebrates the resilience of queer communities worldwide through their unique languages, or "argots." It explores the histories, uses, and vocabularies of these cryptolects. Embedded in an interactive map and website, this work invites viewers to engage with the power of language as a tool for marginalized communities.
