In our lab, faculty, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students focus on multicultural research using responsive and diverse methods. We base our methods and scholarship on the process of praxis, as developed by Paulo Freire.

Multicultural praxis is an approach to activist scholarship that explores how the multiple meanings of culture and identity can influence the experience of different systems, such as individuals, groups, organizations, or communities. Our focus on "culture" very inclusive and incorporates identities such as gender, race, ethnicity, disability, age, and religion.

Current work in our lab has focused primarily on the experiences of emerging adults, ages 18 - 30, and how multiple identities and social contexts can relate to civic engagement and participation. As our world becomes increasingly complex and diverse, courses and programs that effectively prepare students for civic and community participation have become increasing important.
