The Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan is one of the oldest and best established centers for the study of comparative literature in the country. Founded in 1937, our program is a magnet for innovative research and undergraduate and graduate teaching. We are a markedly interdisciplinary department that believes in the critical role of the humanities, both within and beyond academia. We have graduate students and faculty from all over the globe, and a deep commitment to diversity that translates into one of the most flexible programs in the country.
The PhD in Comparative Literature is a six-year doctoral program that emphasizes the international and interdisciplinary nature of Comparative Literature. Our curriculum is designed to be as flexible as possible, allowing students to develop expertise in areas of traditional interest to comparatists and to learn about new developments in the humanities. The program has strong language requirements but provides flexibility in the ways that students put their language and cultural proficiency to use. The program places strong emphasis on literary, critical and cultural theory but makes possible a variety of definitions of what theory is and how it is to be applied.

Ecology and Evolutionary Biology's graduate program embraces education and research on all aspects of biodiversity, including the history of life on earth, the evolutionary mechanisms that generate diversity, the ecological context in which all life has evolved, and the consequences of interactions among organisms, including humans.
We strongly encourage prospective students to apply to our PhD program or Frontiers Master's program. The Frontiers program is a fully-funded, thesis-based master's that serves as a bridge to our PhD program. You can read more about all of our programs on our website, along with information about our research areas, faculty accepting students, and how to start the application process.

Megan Sweeney (Director of Graduate Studies, Department of English Language & Literature)
Julie Cadman-Kim (Program Manager, Helen Zell Writers' Program)
The Department of English has four graduate programs, each one designed to meet the specific needs of students with varied interests in language and literary studies. Students in all our programs are well and equitably funded, receive excellent ongoing support for the full range of their program activities, and are encouraged to take advantage of the resources, including the interdisciplinary strengths, of the Department and University as a whole.
PhD in English Language & Literature
The doctoral program in English Language & Literature is designed to lead to the PhD in six years of post-baccalaureate study. Students specialize in such diverse fields as British literature, American literature, and literatures of the U.S., Gender Studies, African American literature, Postcolonial Studies, and Feminist Theory, exploring a wide range of critical theoretical and cultural perspectives within those fields.
PhD in English & Education
The Joint PhD Program in English and Education prepares students with prior teaching experience to assume positions as professors of English and/or professors of Education. The Program emphasizes research traditions and methods appropriate to study in the discipline of English as well as those customarily followed in the study of educational issues; because of this, the Program is interdisciplinary in character, and students have the opportunity to take a broad range of courses in English and education, and others outside those fields.
PhD in English & Women's and Gender Studies
The Joint PhD Program in English & Women’s and Gender Studies was designed to serve the needs of students whose interests draw on both disciplines. Building on the strengths and resources of the English Department and Women’s and Gender Studies, students have the opportunity to work out an interdisciplinary approach to a research problem from an early point in their training, and benefit from the kind of interdisciplinary mentorship that is necessary to develop and complete an interdisciplinary dissertation.
Helen Zell Writers' Program
The Helen Zell Writers' Program is a two-year graduate program in creative writing leading to a Master of Fine Arts degree. Students concentrate in either fiction or poetry. The program prepares students for a lifetime of writing and professional publication.

Physics has been taught at the University of Michigan since the autumn of 1843, under the name of "Natural Philosophy." At the time, the program consisted of eleven college juniors and two faculty members. The Physics Department, understandably, looks a lot different today. Housed in Randall and Homer A. Neal Laboratories on U-M Central Campus, the department's faculty of over fifty professors and lecturers instruct thousands of students a term under a diverse catalog of courses. Our graduate program, typically consisting of about 150 students, is central to the service, education, and community the program provides. Physics PhD students undergo five years of academic and professional training to earn their degree, all while participating on the frontline of new and exciting research.

What's public policy? Public policy is the laws, guidelines, and rules that governments create in order to make the world a better place. Ford School students (or Fordies, as you'll learn to call us) study public policy because they have a desire to improve the public good. Many of our alumni come from fields such as political science, sociology, economics, public health, social work, and many others -- public policy touches everything we do!
We're engaged in public policy at a critical time in our world's history. Our challenges—pandemic, rising inequality, climate change, refugee crises, a rancorous political landscape, and so much more—are complex. And so our opportunities for impact are enormous.
If you're eager to lead, to find creative solutions, and to make a big impact on your communities, the Ford School is the right place for you—at a most urgent time.
With a Ford School education, you will be leading the institutions and organizations that will shape our public policies for decades to come.
We offer a master of public policy, a master of public affairs, a graduate certificate in Science, Technology, and Public Policy, and three joint PhDs: political science and public policy; economics and public policy; sociology and public policy.

The University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science.
Our curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data, but also including social media posts, sensor data, and administrative records, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. And we bring to data science a focus on data quality — which is not at the center of traditional data science. The new name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data. The program offers doctorate and master of science degrees and a certificate through the University of Michigan.
The program's home is the Institute for Social Research, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.
