There are a few steps you can take to improve the response rates for evaluations in your class.
Outline expectations regarding course evaluations directly in the course syllabus.
Add the course evaluation to the course calendar for students to see. (Both in the syllabus and the course shell.) Include a reminder announcement to students when evaluations become available.
Monitor the student response rate while the evaluation window is open. Use this information to remind your students to complete their evaluations.
Integrate a login link and message about the importance of completing the evaluation directly in the learning unit that is available to students while the evaluation is open. Include the completion of the evaluation as an ungraded activity in the unit.
Have a short video that students can watch where the faculty directly address the importance of the feedback.
This is a video Nick Gaspar developed for his section of NSC373. You are free to use the script he developed to create your own video. This appears inside ‘Unit 10’ of his course, which coincides with the evaluation window.
Use or edit this script to make your own video on the importance of course evaluations. You can work with OEL to record this video in a professional setting. Click the Media Studio link at the top of the page.
Nick Gaspar has been teaching NSC373 since 2014 and implemented these changes in his course in Fall 2018. Below is the data that shows how his student response rates improved while not having a significant impact on his overall evaluation score. Feel free to reach out to him at ngaspar@umich.edu if you have any questions about implementation.
Overall Evaluation Score: 4.45
Average Response Rate: 37.13%
Overall Evaluation Score:4.42
Average Response Rate: 67.8%
Feel free to use or modify this pre-made content in your own course to help boost evaluation rates.
