Nick Forcone

I am a first year PhD student in the Department of Climate and Space Sciences (CLASP) at the University of Michigan.

I am working under Dr. Christiane Jablonowski's Atmospheric Dynamics & Modeling Group. My current work at U-M is in support of an NSF-funded project to enable global, coupled, kilometer-scale climate simulations with the Community Earth System Model (CESM).

Prior to U-M, I graduated from the University of Miami with a B.S. in Marine and Atmospheric Science, majoring in Meteorology and Computer Science.

Background:

I was born and raised in the village of Stony Brook on Long Island, New York. My longtime interest in weather and climate (notably Hurricane Sandy in 2012) motivated me to study meteorology at the University of Miami. Prior to starting my junior year, I completed an NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (R.E.U) program at the University of Hawai'i studying atmospheric Lamb Waves from the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption. The following summer, I completed a NOAA Hollings internship evaluating the gustiness parameterization of the COARE air-sea flux algorithm at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in Seattle. Later in my undergraduate studies I developed an interest in programming and computer science and its applications to meteorology. I ended up adding a major in computer science to build a foundation for more advanced study of numerical weather and climate prediction in graduate school. Outside of research, my hobbies include hiking, photography, tea, antiquing, and exploring cities.
