You are creating an advertisement (you know, like the ones your favorite influencer "never" posts) for your favorite book. Use our class Flipgrid to record and post your #ad, or record yourself using Screencastify-a Google Chrome extension- to voiceover a slideshow with the necessary information. Include these elements:
Author name
Books they have written (and/or name of the book you are talking about)
Main character(s)
A brief summary (look to the back of the book to help you but DON'T PLAGIARIZE!!)
One internal conflict the main character faces
One external conflict the main character faces
Three or four personality or physical traits of the main character
A passage from the book
I will create an advertisement for my favorite book.
I will speak clearly and address each of the assignment components.
I will develop my advertisement using multimedia tools such as Flipgrid, Google Slides, or Screencastify.
Respond to a classmate's #ad and engage in a book discussion! Consider it your own, tiny book club. Ask your peer about their opinions on the book, the author's writing, the character's choices, etc. Write a thought-out paragraph in response to a peer's #ad following spelling and grammar conventions.
I will ask higher-level questions in response to my peer's well-researched claim.
I will give my peer constructive criticism.
Use one of these prompts (or contact me for approval of a topic of your choice) and develop an argument for one side with:
1 claim
2 pieces of evidence
3 reasons for each piece of evidence
Explain your claim, evidence, and reasoning in a video of you explaining your points. You can use Flipgrid, or Screencastify if you would like to present a powerpoint with a voiceover.
See these resources for more information on how to develop a claim, evidence, and reasoning (CER).
I will create an argument in response to one of the prompts.
I will defend my claim with evidence from research and reasoning to support this evidence.
Respond to a classmate's argumentative speech.
Have you been convinced? Do you have any questions for the expert? Did their argument have a blind spot? Has your position on the topic been swayed? Explain yourself in a well-written paragraph following 8th grade writing guidelines or in a video response following speaking goals listed in the "convince me" assignment details.
OR
Respond to your peer's post with suggestions on what would have made their argument stronger. Remember, no ad hominem* attacks. Critique ideas, not people.
I will respond to my classmate's argument with a well-researched counterargument using my own claim, evidence, and reasoning (CER).
I will defend my own claim with research.
I will ask higher-level questions in response to my peer's well-researched claim.
I will give my peer constructive criticism.
*ad hominem- attacks directed at a person rather than the position they maintain.
