- Aditya Adiredja - Taking an Anti-deficit Perspective on Mathematical Ideas
Organization: University of Arizona
Event Description: In this talk, I will argue for taking an anti-deficit perspective on mathematical ideas in our work as a researcher and a teacher. I will define deficit discourse in mathematics education and how it is supported by narratives of what counts as mathematics and deficit (racist) narratives about minoritized students. We then explore the role of the anti-deficit perspective in challenging this deficit discourse. I will share findings from two of my research studies: the first is about the relationships between creativity and the anti-deficit perspective, and the second is about the experience of one university instructor in applying an anti-deficit perspective in her teaching. Both studies are situated at the undergraduate level with students and instructors discussing the concept of basis from Linear Algebra.
- Vilma Mesa - Investigating High-Quality Instruction at Community Colleges with a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lens
Organization: University of Michigan
Event Description: What does it take to assess high quality mathematical instruction? If you have already designed a measure that captures that quality, what does it take to include a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) lens? In this talk I will present ongoing work done in collaboration with community college faculty and researchers from several institutions that seeks to assess high quality of mathematical instruction at community colleges. Despite having a validated instrument that captures key dimensions of high-quality instruction at community colleges, modifying it to incorporate a DEI lens required a shift in our approach to the work, to investigate instead the various ways in which community college students experience equity, diversity, and inclusion in the community college mathematics classroom. As we are early in the process, I will present strategies we are using to collect the data and some preliminary themes about students’ understanding of equity.
