Want to submit a piece or join the MJAS team?
Prospective authors should refer to the submission guidelines below. MJAS applicants wishing to join the editorial team need to submit a brief statement of interest to mjas.contact@umich.edu. We use Encyclopedia Britannica's definition of Asia's boundaries and welcome submissions relating to any topic that falls within these geographic boundaries.
Before submitting a Word Doc/Docx copy of your piece to mjas.contact@umich.edu, all authors must also submit an accompanying Google Form to provide basic info on the submission.
Required for ALL submissions
The journal’s objective is to showcase original research papers and creative works related to Asia. A submission should make a clear and compelling argument, demonstrate a clear mastery of the subject area, explain its significance, and employ a coherent writing style. Submissions should relate directly to at least one of the countries or sub-regions of Asia. We use the Encyclopedia Britannica definition of Asia being anything to the east of Turkey. For more information, please follow this link. Articles submitted to MJAS should not have previously been accepted for publication or review at another undergraduate or graduate-level publication.
To submit your work, e-mail your submission as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx) The subject line of your email and the title of your Word document should fit the following formatting:
[Region] [Author’s Full Name] [Paper Title] [Academic Institution] [Year of Graduation/Expected Graduation]
EXAMPLE: [Korea][John Doe][Paper Title][University of Michigan][2021]
All authors must also submit an accompanying Google Form.
Each piece is evaluated utilizing the following criteria:
Originality of work
The assertion of a clear and compelling argument
Quality of evidence provided to support claim
Overall organization of ideas
Grammar, syntax, spelling
The Editor in Chief, Managing Editor, and Senior Editors review pieces submitted for consideration. Pieces are selected based on originality, strength of argument, and analytical thought.
Authors will be notified of whether their piece has been selected for publication within a month of the submission deadline. They will need to complete an Author Agreement within 7 days of being notified of selection.
Authors should meet with their assigned Senior Editor to review the first round of edits.
After the first round of edits, the piece will be moved to the Associate editing team.
Authors will be asked to implement AE edits.
A final round of revisions will be sent by the SE to the author.
The final submission of the piece should be submitted by each semester’s deadline (will be communicated to authors ahead of time).
You should receive a confirmation of receipt approximately 1 week after submission. The authors will be informed of whether their submission has been accepted for review approximately 2 weeks after the initial submission deadline. Should the article be accepted, the responsibility falls upon the author to communicate promptly with their respective editor to facilitate an effective, and efficient revision process. The assignment of editor(s) will be specified in the initial acceptance e-mail. Editors are assigned on the basis of previous experience/knowledge of the article’s topic. Authors may submit multiple articles for consideration and may re-submit their work for consideration during the next call for submissions.
Please note that the MJAS Editorial Board reserves the right to refuse publication of any article.
Submissions should contain complete citations and references. The submission should follow the Chicago Manual Style format (University of Chicago Press) for style, grammar, punctuation, and form as well as for references and endnotes. To ensure the anonymity of the evaluation process, any information identifying the author should be removed from the Word document containing the article. If any of these guidelines are not followed, your submission will not be reviewed. We reserve the right to reject any submission that does not properly follow Chicago (Notes and Bibliography) citation guidelines.
