There is so much more to being a Tau Bate than the professional recognition for being a member of the oldest engineering honor society. Being a member of Tau Beta Pi opens doors to several membership benefits including access to the scholarship program and the Tau Beta Pi Job Board.
Tau Beta Pi offers the Scholarship Program to undergraduate Tau Bates. In 2023, 265 scholarships from 452 applicants were awarded. These scholarships provide $2000 to support an undergraduate Tau Bate's studies.
The Fellowship Program is in place to support Tau Bates that wish to continue their studies past the undergraduate level. In 2022, 31 members received fellowships from a pool of 278 applicants. While the fellowship is far more selective, it does provide its recipient with $10,000 to further their education.
Tau Beta Pi offers The Best People Engineering Job Board. A platform that connects Tau Bates with employers looking to hire Tau Bates. The platform is exclusive to members of Tau Beta Pi, that means that you will only compete with other Tau Bates for these positions. The job board also allows you to upload your resume so potential employers can find you.
In a similar fashion, Tau Beta Pi holds annual recruiting fairs exclusive to Tau Bates. These fairs are an excellent opportunity to leave an impression on recruiters. The fairs recruit for cooperate positions and graduate schools.
Tau Beta Pi has partnered with Dell and Hewlett Packard to provide technology discounts to all Tau Bates.

Tau Bates are kinda cool!
Each year Tau Beta Pi hosts two large scale gatherings, the National Convention and the District Conferences. In the case of National Convention, Tau Bates from across the United States gather to conduct association business. The District Conferences are gatherings of Tau Bates from each of the chapters within the district.
Our chapter is fully funded to send a Voting Delegate to the National convention to represent Michigan Iota and the University of Michigan - Dearborn. Previous convention sites include: Ann Arbor, Knoxville, San Diego, Orlando, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, and even Dearborn! The National Convention is a fantastic opportunity to practice networking and to experience professional travel.
The District 7 Conferences alternate between Michigan and Ohio each year. These smaller scale events allow us to sent a greater number of Tau Bates. For the 2024 District Conference in Dayton, Ohio we sent four Michigan Iota members including an initiate from the week before! These conferences allow you to meet with Tau Bates in your region and build connections that will outlast your time at university.
Michigan Iota currently maintains eight officer positions on our Officer Board. The positions include: President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Corresponding Secretary, Recording Secretary, Activities Coordinator, Outreach Coordinator, and Media Coordinator. Six of those positions are open to members as soon as they are initiated!
The officer board is responsible for leaving the chapter in a better position than where they inherited it. They manage all the chapter business from planning events to reporting to headquarters. The officers have the platform to develop the chapter and themselves.
Post graduation there are several opportunities to stay in touch with Michigan Iota and to remain a leader in the community. You could return as a chapter advisor, helping the chapter officers successfully guide the chapter forward. You could also join an alumni chapter like the South East Michigan Alumni Chapter (SEMIAC) to stay in touch with Tau Beta Pi.
Tau Beta Pi will connect you to some of the most talented students at our university, even if they are not Tau Bates themselves. As a chapter we frequently interact with other student organizations to host events and build the special community we have at the University of Michigan Dearborn.
Being a Tau Bate gives you a platform to leave your own mark on our university, something that you will be remembered for once you graduate. It could be tutoring students in classes that you have taken in the past, helping them find their own success in their studies. You could organize professional development events to help people diversify their education. You could bring together students from other student orgs to build networks that will serve them far into their professional careers. One could take advantage of opportunities given by the Dean's office to be part of university wide events. There are so many ways that you can leave your mark on the university; how will you leave yours?
The university recognizes Michigan Iota for our distinguished members. The Dean's office regularly presents opportunities to Michigan Iota leadership to leave their mark on our campus. The Dean of Engineering, Ghassan Kridli, is a Tau Bate himself. The Dean's office regularly invites student leadership to meetings for feedback. Additionally, the Dean's office has work with Michigan Iota leadership for large scale events such as Engineers Week and the ELB Renaming Ceremony.
Each semester we celebrate our newest members at our Initiation Ceremonies and the Honor Society Banquet. Tau Bates are always welcome and highly encouraged to come to initiation ceremonies to demonstrate the special connection we have as Tau Bates.
The Honor Society Banquet is a gathering of all CECS honor societies to collectively celebrate our newest members and all our accomplishments in the previous semester. There are speeches from the presidents of each of the societies in attendance in addition to a featured guest speaker.
