Michigan Innovations in Addiction Care
through Research & Education
Welcome to MI-ACRE! We're a team of University of Michigan addiction researchers and clinicians focused on embracing cutting-edge research and innovative evidence-based practices to drive continuous improvement in addiction prevention, care, training and education. MI-ACRE is part of the University of Michigan Addiction Center in the Department of Psychiatry at Michigan Medicine.
We're delighted to announce the 2026 recipients of the
MI-ACRE Advancing Addiction Care Award
Congratulations to each awardee and thank you for your dedication to improving addiction care in our communities!
Ms. Ikhlas is a University of Michigan Medical Student. Ms. Ikhlas will use the award to adapt successful elements of her addiction care nonprofit to Michigan Medicine by offering virtual recovery group meetings and/or a PrEP education intervention for patients with substance use disorders. Ms. Ikhlas aims to increase access to recovery support and prevention education for patients in addiction care.
Dr. Martz is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Martz and her team will use the award to gather feedback from young adults on proposed Building Brain-Based Resilience (3BR) video materials prior to final production. This feedback will help ensure that the brain-based substance use education content is relevant, engaging, non-stigmatizing, and effective for young adults receiving addiction care.
Dr. Narain-Birgy is a PGY3 Psychiatry House Officer. Dr. Narain-Birgy will use the award to attend the 2027 American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) national conference and develop a one-hour lecture for Michigan Medicine PGY1 and PGY2 psychiatry residents. The lecture will highlight current addiction psychiatry updates, substance use trends, screening approaches, clinical pearls, psychodynamic considerations, and treatment strategies. Dr. Narain-Birgy’s efforts will bring timely addiction psychiatry education back to Michigan Medicine trainees.
