"Triggers" are common phrases used by trainees that serve as opportunities to "activate" or "start" your teaching. These are usually common medical conditions they encounter, or common questions they ask.
The same strategies that promote engagement also promote memory: tell stories, ask purposeful questions to different levels of learners, use mental frameworks like advanced organizers and mnemonics, and incorporate visual aids.
If learners are hesitant to respond to questions, try asking questions that can’t be wrong like “how have you seen someone approach dyspnea before?”
Three types of commonly used advanced organizers are: charts, flow-diagrams, and visual analogies (like the dyspnea pyramid).
