Astrobites Author 2019-now

Astrobites is a service run by graduate students from around the world that take academic articles and summarize them in a way that makes all of astronomy approachable and interesting. The mission of astrobites to make astronomy more inclusive, regardless of the reader's background.

I have had three leadership positions within the collaboration:

  • Hiring Co-Chair -- lead the 2021 and current 2022 hiring process with the goal of hiring 20 new authors.

  • Scheduling Chair -- schedule authors and editors to ensure a new post is released each day, maintained a queue of posts for when authors are unable to write on their assigned day.

  • Admin Committee Member and Co-Chair -- admin committee acts as a nexus of the astrobites community and my job has been to make sure Astrobites as a whole runs smoothly both for the authors and our readers.

Astronomy on Tap - Ann Arbor 2019-2020

[interrupted due to Covid]

Astronomy on Tap in Ann Arbor took place the second Tuesday of each month

Astronomy on Tap is a free, engaging, and science and fun-filled outreach event where each month we have two public talks by someone interested in space. We have had astronomers, physicists, space scientists, and historians come and give talks to the Ann Arbor community. I led the re-vitalization of the Ann Arbor Astronomy on Tap after its three-year hiatus. I have organized a large group of grad students, postdocs, faculty, and staff all interested in bringing AoT back and open to the Ann Arbor community. Leaning on my out-of-this-world humor and audience wrangling, I was also the MC for each event.

Letters to a Pre-scientist 2019-present

I am currently a scientist mentor for the program Letters to a Pre-Scientist. I each year I write letters to my pen pal, a middle school student, and speak to them about my science, being a scientist in general, and finding ways to keep them engaged and interested in learning. I had a very enjoyable experience, and it was not a significant time commitment. If this sounds interesting to you, I'd highly recommend volunteering: https://www.prescientist.org/for-scientists/sign-up/

Science Olympiad Coach - 2019

I was the Solar System Coach for the Slauson Science Olympiad team - a public middle school in Ann Arbor. Each week I met with students interested in the Solar System event and I create brand-new teaching materials for them to practice for competition. The team made it to Nationals where the finished in the top half of the country.

Undergraduate Outreach

Active Galactic Videos

As an undergraduate I was a founding member of the YouTube channel:Active Galactic Videos. The purpose of the channel was to inform the public on astronomical topics, clear up misconceptions, and highlight astronomy in Southern Arizona. I also have presented on the evolution and impact of the channel at the 229th and 231st AAS conferences. I am also currently co-author on a paper to an educational journal exploring the AGV project from a student prospective.

Wrote and starred in the 'HR Diagram Song'

The first video on the channel that I also wrote and co-hosted: 'What Astronomers Actually Do'

Co-wrote and co-starred in '17 Tonnes of Spinning Glass: Making the World's Largest Telescope'

Another music video that I wrote and starred in: 'Steward and Me'

Astronomy Club

I was an active member of the University of Arizona Astronomy Club all four years of undergrad. I served as an officer for three of my four years. Held our elections at the beginning of every calendar years, so in 2015 year I served as historian, 2016 I was the president, and in 2017 I was the vice president. Throughout each year I held leadership roles by organizing meetings, running club events and trips, leading community and outreach events, and representing astronomy club in the eyes of the UA student body government.

I may be gone from UA and the astronomy club, but they have a great website: UA Astronomy Club
