HUMANITY FIRST AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

Who are we?

Humanity First at U-M is one of the many university chapters of Humanity First, an international non-profit founded in 1994. Since its original establishment in the U.K., the organization's influence has spread to 43 countries across six continents, providing disaster relief and humanitarian aid. At the university level, we incorporate the larger organization's values through local community service and an annual dedicated global outreach component.

What do we do?

Humanity First at U-M prides itself on a balance between local and global outreach. Locally, we engage in community service through several pathways in Ann Arbor. At the global level, members have the opportunity to travel to Antigua, Guatemala to assist in the establishment and operation of local health clinics.

How do we do it?

Humanity First at U-M relies on club-based fundraising and individual donations to fund club meetings, student events, and to help students in paying for the Guatemala trip.

When do we do it?

Local community service opportunities are available throughout the academic year, whereas the Guatemala trip takes place specifically during spring break.

Why should you join?

MORE ABOUT THE GUATEMALA TRIP:

Each year, Humanity First at U-M gathers at least 15 students and several volunteer physicians to travel to Antigua, Guatemala over spring break. There, our undergraduate volunteers perform various tasks in the health clinics of our sister organization, Humanity First Guatemala. Students will learn how to take vitals, manage a waiting room, and assist in running our in-clinic pharmacy. Students will also have the opportunity to shadow both American and volunteer physicians from surrounding countries as they practice in the third-world environment. See our trip reports from recent years below for detailed accounts and photos of student activities!

Students will not have to do any tasks that they are uncomfortable with! This is an opportunity to shadow and observe, learn, and assist in a new medical environment. The Humanity First Guatemala clinics are organized and run by the professional staff at Humanity First, they are not run by our students. As such, students have the option, not the obligation, to help out in the clinics.
It is spring break! Working in the clinic is certainly an interesting experience, but we also like to set aside one or two days for group excursions and community building.
You do not need to know Spanish! (Though it helps.) We will teach our students all of the necessary Spanish prior to the trip. Additionally, students will always have access to translators in the clinics. Interacting with patients in Spanish is a wonderful experience, but we recognize not all of our students are comfortable doing so.
Private housing with security. Our students and physicians stay in a group house in Antigua with a full kitchen and cleaning staff as well as 24-hour security. The kitchen staff will adjust meal plans for any dietary needs or preferences. Students will have one roommate and a shared bathroom that is cleaned by the house staff daily.

Students/parents interested in the Guatemala trip should email zwaarala@umich.edu for any additional information and access to our International Committee Application.
