Ian Hiskens is the Vennema Professor of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. His research interests lie at the intersection of power system analysis and systems theory, in particular modelling, optimization, dynamics and control of large-scale, networked, nonlinear systems. His recent activity has focused largely on integration of renewable generation and controllable loads.
He is involved in numerous IEEE activities in the Power and Energy Society, Control Systems Society and Circuits and Systems Society, and has served as the Vice-President for Finance of the IEEE Systems Council. He is a past Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems-I: Regular Papers and the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology.
Hiskens earned his BEng (Elec) and BAppSc (Math) degrees from the Capricornia Institute of Advanced Education, Rockhampton, Australia in 1980 and 1983 respectively. He earned his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Newcastle, Australia in 1991. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of Engineers Australia, and a Chartered Professional Engineer in Australia.
Prof. Ian Hiskens talks paragliding, living in Australia, raising his five kids, what qualities he looks for in students, and how he sees the future of power and energy advancing in the age of climate change.
