The HEIT (Human Factors and Emerging Intelligent Technologies) Lab seeks to understand and enhance Human, System, and Environment interactions by applying Human Factors theories, design principles, AI techniques, and employing analytic data science approaches. The goal of our work is to improve user safety and user experiences. In particular, we focus on applying statistical and data mining techniques to analyze and model driver behavior, along with other road users' when they interact with new emerging technologies and systems under variety of dynamic environment.

Shan Bao
Dr. Bao is a Chair and Professor in the Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Department, University of Michigan-Dearborn, with a joint appointment as Associate Research Scientist in the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute’s Human Factors Group. She is also an affiliated faculty member with UM Civil and Environmental Engineering department, MIDAS and UM Robotics Institute. Dr. Bao received her Ph.D. in mechanical and industrial engineering from the University of Iowa in 2009.
Her research interests focus on human factors issues related to connected and automated vehicle technologies, ADAS system evaluation, and big data analysis. She has served as the PI or co-PI of 54 research projects. She has published 72 technical publications, including 40 referred journals articles. Shan is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and has served as the chair of the Surface Transportation Technical Group of Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. She is a also member of the TRB Vehicle User Characteristics committee and the TRB Human Factors in Road Vehicle Automation subcommittee.

Human Factors Postdoctoral researcher
We are seeking an outstanding Post-Doctoral Research Fellow for a one-year, renewable appointment. This opportunity can provide you the experience of working on exciting connected and automated vehicle technology-elated projects, while working with a group of experts in this domain, and help you build your future career.
PhD students
I’m currently looking for Ph.D. students with Human Factors focus, who will be enrolled in the department of Industrial and Manufacturing System, University of Michigan-Dearborn, starting in 2025. Our Ph.D. program is affiliated with Rackham Graudtae School at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. The students will have competitive financial support through graduate student assistantship for up to five years, and are expected to work with me on exciting projects related to connected and automated vehicle technologies.
Student interns
We are also looking for motivated student interns with engineering or computer science background to work on exciting AV related projects with us.
