Agniva: Sustainabilty's Succulent Planting Event

by Agniva Bhaumik

The popularity of succulents has skyrocketed over recent years. They are seemingly relatively

easy to take care of, so they happen to be a great option for those who aren’t great with plants

or simply do not have much time to put into plant care. This is why succulents are especially

popular with college students. Almost every student can be found with one species of the little

plants next to their dorm window, as a way to brighten up their room with some life.

Stepping into the Bowman room on Friday, March 11th, at around 7 pm, your eyes would be

greeted with earthen pots, heavy bags of soil, and strange-looking, colorful succulent plants

spread out over the table. The GSP sustainability committee had put together a succulent

planting event. Students laugh as they carefully pour the soil into their pots, with some still

escaping and spilling out on the paper towel below. People carefully choose from the variety of

spiked, thorny, or jewel-like plants, which came in shades ranging from pink to green. Many

struggled to get their plant to stand up inside their pot, but eventually everyone had their own

personal succulent to take with them and hopefully, spruce up their room for a while forward.

Succulents are an excellent way to improve your environment, as they continue to produce oxygen at night, freshening up the air in your room. They are also beneficial to the environment because they can remove toxins from the air and improve the humidity. Succulents, and plants in general are also great for one’s mental health. This event by the sustainability committee most definitely bettered the North Quad community’s health and environment overall.
