Disability Culture

On February 2, 2021, an 83 year-old woman named Teru Inaba was punched several times in the face by her son in Tokyo, Japan and died from her injuries. She was bedridden and had cognitive impairment, but her son claimed he simply "had grown tired of caring for her."

This is not an isolated incident. Over the past five years, more than 700 disabled people have been murdered by parents or caregivers. Many of these cases go unnoticed. The ones that do get media coverage often focus on sympathy for the murderer.

The group Disability Culture at University of Michigan works to raise awareness of this issue and demand justice and equal protection for those with disabilities. On March 1st, 2021 at 7PM EST, in partnership with the Disability Alliance and Caucus at Virginia Tech, Disability Culture held a vigil to commemorate the lives of those lost and remind everyone that they have value.
